What are the laws about exhaust systems that are too loud?

In Virginia, there are laws about exhaust systems that are too loud. According to Virginia Code 46.2-1019, it is illegal to modify the exhaust system or muffler of a motor vehicle in a way that increases the noise produced by the engine beyond that of the original exhaust system design. It is also illegal to operate a vehicle with an exhaust system that has been modified in a way that exceeds the noise level of 95 decibels in a measured 50-foot distance, or 100 decibels in a measured 15-foot distance. Depending on the level of violation, drivers found operating a vehicle with an illegal exhaust system may receive a warning or a ticket. If a motorist gets a ticket, they may be fined up to $250 and have three demerit points added to their driver’s license. If the offender is a repeat offender, they may be fined up to $500 and have five points added to their license. In addition, Virginia does have a “noise pollution” law for all motor vehicles. This law states that any motor vehicle operating on the roads and highways of the Commonwealth of Virginia must be operated in such a way that all exhaust noise is not plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet or more. If a driver is found in violation of this law, they may be issued a warning or a ticket. It is important for drivers in Virginia to remember these laws and adhere to them in order to ensure the safety of the roads. Exhaust systems that are too loud can be disruptive and dangerous to other drivers, causing distraction and potential accidents. Following the laws of Virginia will help keep everyone on the roads safe and sound.
