What are the laws about exhaust systems that are too loud?
In Washington, there are specific laws on how loud a vehicle’s exhaust system can be. The State Patrol enforces these laws, which state that an exhaust system on an automobile must not exceed 95 decibels when measured from a distance of 50 feet in front of the vehicle. Exhaust systems that are modified or altered may be subject to stricter sound limits. In general, the louder an exhaust system is, the more likely it is to violate this limit. The State Patrol may take readings from any vehicle they suspect is too loud, and they may also issue warnings for loud exhaust systems. These warnings come with a fine, which can be up to $111 for a first offense. It is important to note that any vehicle which does not meet the state-mandated sound limits must be altered or changed in some way to bring it into compliance. Violations can also lead to a suspension of a vehicle’s registration, and ultimately, the suspension of a driver’s license. In Washington, it is important to pay attention to the local laws on exhaust systems and to ensure that all vehicles are in compliance with the state’s sound limits. Knowing the laws and understanding how to keep vehicles within those limits can prevent unwanted fines and other legal issues.
