What are the laws about towing a trailer?
In Washington, the laws about towing a trailer depend on the size and weight of the trailer and its contents. If the trailer is less than or equal to 2,000 pounds unloaded, then any vehicle with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 10,000 pounds or less can tow it. You must use a hitch system that is designed for your vehicle and trailer, and it must be properly connected to both. You must also have the proper lights and brake systems connected to your trailer, and they must be in good working order. If the trailer is larger than 2,000 pounds, it must be attached to a vehicle with a GVWR of 8,000 pounds or greater. If the trailer weighs more than 10,000 pounds, it must be connected to a vehicle with a GVWR of 20,000 pounds or greater. Additionally, the driver must have a valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) if the trailer and its contents weigh more than 26,000 pounds. No matter the size or weight of your trailer, you also need to make sure that it is properly loaded and secured. All cargo in trailer must be secured with tie-downs or straps, and the trailer tongue must be within 10 percent of the trailer’s weight capacity. Furthermore, anything protruding from the trailer must be marked with a red flag or cloth. Finally, make sure you’re aware of the speed limits for towing a trailer in Washington. The maximum speed limit for towing a trailer is 55 mph on state highways, and 65 mph on interstates. All drivers towing a trailer in Washington must abide by these laws in order to maintain their safety and that of other drivers on the road.
