What are the laws about towing another vehicle?

In Washington, there are a few laws regarding towing another vehicle. Generally, it is illegal to tow another vehicle without the owner’s permission. If the owner of the vehicle being towed gives permission, the driver towing the vehicle must follow specific regulations. The driver towing the vehicle must have a valid license. The tow ropes, chains, or cables used to tow the vehicle must be strong enough to support the weight of the vehicle being towed. The driver must also make sure that the brakes on the towed vehicle are in good working condition. When driving, the towed vehicle must be visible from the mirrors of the vehicle doing the towing. There is also a 10-foot distance that must be maintained between the vehicle doing the towing and the vehicle being towed, unless the towed vehicle is a motorcycle. The towed vehicle also needs to have its own lighting system. Those lights must be operating at all times when the vehicle is in motion. If the lights do not turn on, the driver must stop the vehicle and make sure the lights are working before continuing. Finally, the vehicle being towed must be insured. The driver must maintain the insurance at all times while towing the vehicle. If any of these laws are violated, the driver could be subject to fines and penalties.
