What is the law about having a pet in a car?

In California, it is generally illegal to have a pet in a car under California Vehicle Code Section 23117 VC. This law states that no person shall drive a vehicle while a live animal or bird is in their lap or the driver’s area of the vehicle. This law is primarily in place to ensure that drivers have their full attention on the road, as having a pet in the car can be distracting and can lead to a serious accident. If a driver is found to be driving with a pet in their lap, they can be subject to a fine of up to $250. In addition, some animals can be too big or have too long of a tail to fit comfortably in the driver’s area of the car. Because of this, it is important that drivers keep their pets properly secured or in an approved pet carrier. This will prevent the pet from becoming a distraction or being injured in the event of an accident. It is also illegal to leave a pet unattended in a car in California. This law is in place to protect the pet from suffering from extreme temperatures and from being stolen. If a person is found to be leaving their pet unattended in a vehicle, they can face a fine of up to $100. Ultimately, it is important for drivers in California to obey the law and keep their pets secured and out of the driver’s area of the vehicle. This will help ensure the safety of both the driver and the pet.
