What are the laws about tinting the side mirrors?

In Tennessee, it is illegal for any person to place tinted material or any other material on any motor vehicle’s side-view mirror that obstructs the driver’s ability to clearly see the rear and side views of the vehicle. It is also illegal to place a tinted, colored or flashing material on any window of a motor vehicle other than the front windshield. Tinted material may only be used on windows behind the driver’s field of vision, which is defined as “items located more than 30 inches to the rear of the driver’s head when seated in an upright and normal driving position.” The percentage of light that may be transmitted through the tinted material must be at least 25%, and the percentage of reflection must be less than 25%. In Tennessee, it is also illegal to tint the side mirrors of a motor vehicle. The only exception to this is if the side mirror has an integrated tinting system, such as those found on some luxury vehicles. In this case, the side mirror must have a light to dark transitioning area that is a minimum of two inches wide, centered within the mirror. Ultimately, it is important for all drivers in Tennessee to understand the laws regarding tinted material, including those related to side mirrors. Ignorance of the law does not provide protection from the consequences of violating the law, so it is in the best interest of all drivers to familiarize themselves with these regulations.
