What are the laws about window tinting on commercial vehicles?

Window tinting on commercial vehicles in California is subject to certain regulation. California Vehicle Code § 26708 generally requires commercial vehicles to have a 70 percent VLT (light transmittance) level for the windshield and front side windows, and a non-reflective tint of up to 60 percent VLT level for the rear side windows and rear window. Certain exceptions are allowed in the case of medical necessity and in cases where the vehicle must transport hazardous material and a darker tint is approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition, Commercial Vehicle Code § 10805 requires commercial vehicles to display identifying marks such as a company name, address, and license plate number on the rear window of the vehicle. The identifying marks must be printed in a dark and contrasting color and must be easy to read from a distance of 50 feet. The window tinting of commercial vehicles must comply with the standards above and failure to do so will result in a citation and the requirement to remove or replace the tint. Only then, after all tinting requirements have been met, will the vehicle be certified to operate on California highways.
