What are the laws about towing a trailer?

In California, it’s important to know the laws surrounding towing a trailer. If you are driving a vehicle that is towing a trailer, both the vehicle and the trailer must be properly registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The trailer must also have the proper license plates, registration stickers, and safety chains, as required by law. If the trailer weighs more than 3,000 pounds, the driver must have a Class B noncommercial license. Drivers who have a Class B license must also pass a test given by the California Highway Patrol to demonstrate their knowledge of trailer towing laws and safety regulations. The trailer must also have properly functioning brakes, lights, and turn signals. California law requires that the trailer be connected to the tow vehicle with safety chains and must have its own tail lights, left and right turn signals, brake lights, and license plate lights. The trailer must also have reflectors, which are required to be visible from 150 feet away. It is also important to note that the driver must be able to control both the tow vehicle and the trailer at all times. Park rangers and law enforcement officers may inspect the trailer, the tow vehicle, and the overall connection between the two at any time. Obeying the law is essential for the safety of both the driver and other motorists on the road.
