What are airman and aircraft certificates?

Airman and aircraft certificates, issued by the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, are documents that certify the qualifications of an individual airman or an aircraft, and are necessary to operate legally in the airspace of South Carolina and beyond. An airman certificate is a document that proves the qualifications of a pilot, aircraft mechanic, or other aviation professionals. These include a type of license, medical certificate, pilot ratings, and endorsements. An aircraft certificate is a document that proves that an aircraft meets safety standards and is fit for flight. Aircraft certificates include airworthiness certificates, registration certificates, experimental certificates, and special flight operations certificates. Airworthiness certificates are mandatory for all aircraft that are flown in South Carolina airspace and are issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aircraft registration certificates are issued by the FAA when an aircraft is purchased, and list the name and address of the registered owner. Experimental certificates are issued for new aircraft designs, allowing manufacturers and amateur builders to test the aircraft before it is certified by the FAA. Special flight operations certificates are issued to operate aircraft for special activities such as flight training, agriculture, aerial photography, and reforestation. These certificates must be renewed periodically and are issued by the Aeronautics Commission in South Carolina. In order to legally operate aircraft in South Carolina airspace, an airman and an aircraft must each have valid certificates as evidence of their qualifications and safety standards.
