What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

To obtain an instrument rating in South Carolina, an individual must demonstrate proficiency in instrument flying by completing specific training and tests. The individual must have at least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time. At least 15 hours of the 40 must be in an aircraft with an instructor and at least 3 hours must have been in the past 6 months. An individual must also pass a written exam, an oral exam, and a practical test. The written exam consists of 60 multiple choice questions and must be taken at a certified FAA Testing Center. The oral exam is conducted by an examiner and tests the individual’s understanding of the principles of instrument flying. The practical test involves actual instrument flight exercises and must be completed in an aircraft with an examiner. Once the individual passes the written, oral, and practical tests, they will receive their instrument rating. The instrument rating must be renewed every 24 months by taking a flight review or an instrument proficiency check. This is to ensure that the individual is up to date on any changes in the regulations and continues to have the knowledge and skills to safely fly under instrument flight rules (IFR).
