What are the requirements and procedures for an aircraft accident investigation?
In South Carolina, aircraft accidents are investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Every accident must be reported to the NTSB who will decide whether an on-site investigation is necessary. If it is deemed necessary, the NTSB will dispatch an Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) with a team to begin the investigation. The IIC is responsible for conducting interviews, collecting evidence, examining wreckage, and conducting a thorough evaluation of the accident. The FAA is also involved in the investigation, as they have the authority to examine the operations of the aircraft and its pilot as well as any other potential safety issues. The FAA will coordinate with the NTSB to provide technical expertise and assistance in the investigation. The NTSB will also work with the local law enforcement to make sure that the scene of the accident is not disturbed until their investigation is complete. They will also review any available records such as aircraft maintenance records and past flight logs, which could help to identify the cause of the accident. The investigation is concluded when the IIC determines the probable cause of the accident and any safety issues that need to be addressed. The NTSB also creates a report that summarizes their findings, which is then sent to the governing agency to address any safety issues that were identified. The report is also made public so that any interested party can view the results of the investigation.
