How is air cargo regulated?
Air cargo is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington. The FAA has the authority to regulate all commercial and private aviation operations, including cargo carriers operating in the airspace of the United States. The FAA has several regulations that apply specifically to air cargo companies, including the Aircraft Operating Certificate (AOC) and the Air Carrier Operating Certificate (ACOC). The AOC is a document that must be obtained from the FAA before a cargo carrier can commence operations. The purpose of the AOC is to ensure that the cargo carrier is operating safely and in compliance with FAA regulations. The AOC includes specific operational requirements and safety standards that must be met. The ACOC is a certificate issued by the FAA that allows a cargo carrier to transport freight in US airspace. To obtain the ACOC, a cargo carrier must show that it has the necessary qualifications and resources to provide reliable air cargo service. Additionally, the carrier must demonstrate that it has the necessary policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of all cargo. In addition to the AOC and ACOC requirements, cargo carriers must adhere to additional FAA regulations. For instance, cargo carriers must comply with FAA drug and alcohol testing requirements, follow certain flight paths, and maintain a valid maintenance program for their aircraft. Moreover, cargo carriers must adhere to TSA security regulations when transporting dangerous goods and hazardous materials. Finally, all cargo carriers must obtain approval from the FAA to use navigational aids such as GPS and weather radar to ensure safe flying.
