What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to obtain a helicopter rating in Washington, you must go through a few steps. The first step is to get a private or commercial pilot license. To get one of these licenses, you must be at least 16 years old, pass a physical exam, have at least 20 hours of flight time with an instructor, and pass a written and practical exam. Once you get your license, then you must complete additional training and a written test to get a helicopter rating. You will need at least 40 hours of flight time which must include 20 hours of in-flight instruction, 10 hours of solo flight, and three hours of cross-country flight. You will also need to take a written test which covers topics such as helicopters and aerodynamics, aviation regulations and weather, and navigation. In addition to the above steps, you may also need to show proof of insurance for your helicopter, and you may need to get a medical certificate from an approved aviation medical examiner. Once you have completed all of these steps and passed the tests, you will be eligible for your helicopter rating.
