What is the process for obtaining a turbine engine endorsement?

In Washington, pilots need a turbine engine endorsement to be able to fly aircraft with turbine engines. To obtain this endorsement, a pilot must first hold a private pilot’s license and have a minimum of 10 hours of turbine-powered airplane time. This time must include at least five hours of dual flight instruction and three hours of dual instrument instruction. The pilot needs to also have a medical certificate and familiarity with the operations, performance, and systems of the aircraft to be flown. They must also have a working knowledge of FAA regulations and procedures related to turbine powered aircraft. The next step is to request an endorsement from an FAA-designated examiner. The pilot will need to demonstrate a proficiency in the air with the aircraft they wish to fly. During the endorsement exam, the pilot must be able to demonstrate to the examiner that they understand the regulations and safety requirements related to turbine powered aircraft. After passing the flight test administered by the FAA-designated examiner, the pilot will be issued a temporary FAA logbook endorsement giving them the authority to fly the aircraft with the turbine engine. The endorsement is valid for 90 days, after which time the pilot must submit their logbook to the FAA for permanent certification.
