What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?
In Washington, the process for obtaining a helicopter rating is relatively straightforward. However, it does involve some specific requirements that must be met before taking the written and flight examinations. The first step is to be at least 17 years of age and hold at least a private pilot certificate. It is also necessary to have logged a minimum of 10 hours of solo flight in helicopters, including 5 hours of cross-country flight in helicopters, 3 hours of instrument instruction, and 3 hours of night flight. The next step is to pass the written exam, which covers federal regulations, helicopter operations, performances and limitations, and navigation. After the written exam has been passed, the flight examination must be completed. This requires demonstrating a variety of maneuvers, such as hovering, steep turns, autorotations, and navigation. In addition to the written exam and flight test, applicants must also obtain endorsements from an authorized flight instructor. This is to ensure the applicant is prepared to fly a helicopter safely. Finally, applicants must pass a medical examination and obtain a third-class medical certificate from an approved aviation medical examiner. Once all the requirements have been met, the applicant can then apply for the helicopter rating with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once the application is approved, the FAA will issue a pilot certificate with the appropriate helicopter rating.
