How is air cargo regulated?
Air cargo is heavily regulated by both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Kansas state laws. FAA regulations govern how air cargo is shipped, the requirements for secure packages, and who is responsible for the cargo in transit. Requirements for shipments include labeling and documentation on all packages, as well as the use of appropriate container sizes. Proper documentation must include the origin and destination of the cargo, detailed weight and dimensions, and a statement of hazardous materials contained in the shipment. The FAA also requires airlines to employ trained personnel to ensure accurate shipping processes and cargo security. Much of this work is delegated to independent freight forwarders, which act as the middlemen between carriers and shippers. In addition, Kansas has its own regulations for air cargo transportation. Kansas has adopted the International Air Transport Association (IATA) dangerous goods regulations, which are specific to air cargo. These regulations cover handling, packaging, and labeling of dangerous goods, such as flammable, corrosive, or explosive materials. For any air cargo, both the FAA and IATA regulations must be followed to ensure safety and compliance. This includes the use of packaging that is in good condition and stable enough to be transported on a regular basis. Cargo must be loaded on an aircraft in a secure manner, with all documents properly attached. The FAA also requires that carriers have a cargo security program in place to ensure the safety of shipments. By following these regulations, air cargo can be transported safely and securely.
