What is the process for obtaining a medical certificate for a commercial pilot?

In Kansas, the process for obtaining a medical certificate for a commercial pilot is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). First, the prospective commercial pilot must obtain a Medical Certificate from the FAA. This can be done by submitting an aviation medical application, which is called a Form 8500-8, to the FAA. The form can be submitted online, in person, or by mail. Along with the form, the applicant must submit copies of their driver’s license, previous medical certificates, and a medical report from an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). The AME will perform a physical examination that includes vision, hearing, and balance tests, as well as laboratory tests. They will then assess the applicant’s medical fitness for aviation duty under the provisions of the FAA Medical Standards. If the medical examination results are satisfactory, the FAA will issue a Medical Certificate. This certificate is valid for 12 months. If the applicant has a change in baseline medical physical status, or a medical problem arises during the 12-month period, they may need to submit a re-examination form in order to keep the certificate valid.
