What are the requirements and procedures for an aircraft accident investigation?
An aircraft accident investigation is an important part of aviation law in Colorado. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is responsible for investigating civil aircraft accidents that occur in the state and determining a probable cause for the accident. When an aircraft accident occurs in Colorado, the NTSB is notified and a Go-Team is dispatched to the scene of the accident. This team is made up of NTSB investigators and other specialists such as representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft and engine manufacturer, the pilots union, and other legal experts. The NTSB Go-Team will document the evidence, such as the wreckage and any physical evidence found at the accident site. They will also conduct interviews with witnesses, the pilots, air traffic controllers, and any other persons who may have have pertinent information. They will analyze the wreckage, look into the aircrafts history and any mechanical issues, review the flight data, and look into weather conditions at the time of the accident. The NTSB will produce an accident report, which will include a probable cause, conclusions, and specific recommendations for the government and industry. This report will be made publically available and may be used to help prevent similar accidents in the future.
