What are the requirements for aircraft pilots?
Pilot requirements in Colorado are subject to regulation and oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In order to fly an aircraft in the state of Colorado, a pilot must be able to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, experience, and skill to operate the aircraft safely. The first requirement for a pilot is to obtain a Certificate of Airman Proficiency. This certificate is issued by the FAA upon successful completion of an FAA-approved examination. To obtain a certificate of airman proficiency, a pilot must have a valid driver’s license, be at least 16 years of age, complete the appropriate medical examination requirements, and be able to read, write, and speak English. Once the Certificate of Airman Proficiency is obtained, a pilot must also satisfy the FAA’s aeronautical knowledge and flight experience requirements, which include taking a written examination and demonstrating proficiency in the operation of a powered aircraft. The FAA also requires flight experience in accordance with the type of aircraft that a pilot intends to fly. Additionally, Colorado pilots must obtain a state-issued pilot license from the Colorado Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division. The license requires the pilot to take a comprehensive examination that covers airspace regulations, pilot privileges and responsibilities, aeronautical navigation, aircraft operations, and air traffic control procedures. Once a pilot has obtained the appropriate certificates and licenses, they are required to renew them every two years.
