What are the rules and regulations regarding pilot medical examinations?
In Colorado, all pilots must adhere to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines regarding medical examinations. All pilots are required to pass a physical examination administered by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) prior to operating an aircraft. The FAA requires a physical for the issuance and renewal of the following types of certificates: Student Pilot, Recreational Pilot, Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Flight Engineer, Airline Transport Pilot, and Others. The level of examination that a pilot needs to pass depends on the type of certificate they apply for. The physical exam must include a complete physical evaluation and a mental health evaluation. It should also include an eye exam, ear, nose, and throat exam, blood pressure, heart and lung evaluation, and a full medical and mental history. The AME may also require additional tests such as x-rays and electrocardiograms. The AME must complete the appropriate FAA form and submit it to the FAA for approval. The FAA may request additional medical information from the pilot or require further testing. The results of the exam must be reported to the FAA within 30 days after the exam and must include any pertinent medical conditions or medications. Colorado also requires a special endorsement for pilots who fly while taking certain medications. Pilots are responsible for understanding and following the state and FAA regulations regarding medical examinations and medications in order to operate an aircraft safely and legally.
