What is the process for obtaining a seaplane rating?
In order to obtain a seaplane rating in Colorado, an individual will need to obtain a FAA Private Pilot Certificate with an airplane single engine land rating. Once the individual has the required rating, they will need to take additional instruction from a qualified flight instructor. The additional instruction needed for the seaplane rating consists of ground school and at least 10 hours of flight instruction. During the ground instruction, The student must learn the aerodynamics of seaplane operations, the use of checklists, and the different maneuvers that apply to seaplanes. Once the ground instruction is complete, the student will need to complete 10 hours of flight instruction that includes proper taxiing, takeoff and landing techniques, and how to safely navigate on water. In addition, the student should practice basic maneuvers in the air such as turns, climbs, and descents. The student must also be able to safely land on water, and if possible, practice takeoffs from water as well. Once the student has completed all the required training and the flight instructor is satisfied with the student’s progress, the student will be able to take the FAA exam for the seaplane rating. Upon passing the final exam, the student will receive their FAA seaplane rating.
