What are the requirements and procedures for an aircraft accident investigation?
In Minnesota, aircraft accident investigations are governed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This is part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The NTSB investigates all civil aircraft accidents, and any incidents that involve aircraft and other modes of transportation, such as rail or motor vehicle incidents. When an aircraft accident occurs, the NTSB responds by sending a team of investigators onsite to collect information from the scene. The team will also inspect the wreckage and interview any witnesses that were around at the time of the accident. They will usually assess the aircraft’s maintenance records, as well as pilot and air traffic controller reports. After all the data has been collected, the team will draft a report that outlines the cause of the accident. Once the accident report is complete, the NTSB will issue safety recommendations to the FAA and other transportation-related organizations. These recommendations are designed to help prevent similar accidents from happening in the future. The NTSB will also make recommendations to the investigators and pilots involved in the accident in order to improve safety in general. Finally, the NTSB will also make legal determinations and findings to determine if any laws or regulations were broken in the accident. These findings can result in civil and criminal penalties, which can include fines, jail time, or the suspension of a pilot’s license.
