What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

Obtaining a helicopter rating in Minnesota requires following several steps. First, a student pilot must be at least 16 years old, have a pilot’s license and a valid medical certificate. Once the student has obtained these, they must choose a certificated, FAA-approved flight instructor, who will provide instruction on the operation of a helicopter. The student must log a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours of instruction and 10 hours of solo flying. The FAA also requires three hours of night flying. The student must also become proficient in all required areas, including maneuvers, navigation, emergency procedures and night operations. After the student has completed the required flight time, they will take a written exam, commonly known as the “written test.” This test covers the basic principles of helicopter operation, as well as procedures related to navigation, aerodynamics, and other topics related to operating helicopters. The student must then complete a practical test, typically referred to as the “check ride.” This consists of a detailed evaluation of the student’s ability to safely and properly operate a helicopter in a variety of operating conditions and environments. Assuming the student has passed the written and oral tests, the instructor will issue the student a helicopter rating. This rating is valid for 24 months. To maintain the rating, the student must complete at least three take-offs and three landings every 90 days, and take additional flight training and exams every 24 months.
