What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?

In California, obtaining an aviation medical certificate requires applicants to meet specific standards to ensure they can safely operate an aircraft. The type of certificate required depends on the type of aircraft and the activities being performed. In California, Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 67 provides the requirements to obtain an aviation medical certificate. The two categories of certificates are the Third-Class and Second-Class Medical Certificates. The Third-Class Medical Certificate is required for recreational pilots, student pilots, and private pilots. According to FAR 67, to obtain this type of certificate a person must be at least 16 years of age and be able to read, speak, write, and understand English. Additionally, they must have a valid medical certificate issued by an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner. The Second-Class Medical Certificate is required for commercial pilots and airline transport pilots. To qualify for this certificate a person must be 18 years of age or older, and they must have had an aviation medical examination performed by an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner within the past 12 months. In order to receive an aviation medical certificate in California, applicants must also pass a vision, hearing, and physical exam. Furthermore, applicants will need to provide a complete medical and family history, and provide detailed information about any conditions or medications they are currently taking. Finally, a valid aviation medical certificate is only granted if the applicant meets the necessary requirements and is found free from any medical conditions that may impair their ability to safely operate an aircraft.
