What are the requirements for obtaining an aviation medical certificate?

To obtain an aviation medical certificate in Michigan, you must be evaluated and certified by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). The AME is an FAA-designated doctor who is qualified to perform the aviation medical exam. During the exam, the AME will consult FAA medical standards and determine whether the applicant meets the minimum medical requirements for a specific certificate. The most common certificates are Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3, with Class 1 being the highest level of certification. Class 1 certification requires a comprehensive physical exam to assess your vision, hearing, mental and physical health, as well as a lab test to check your heart function. During the exam, you must show that you can effectively communicate, and demonstrate the physical and mental capacity to safely operate an aircraft. Class 2 certification is similar to a Class 1 certification, except that it does not require a lab test. However, it still requires a physical exam and, in some cases, additional testing to ensure that the pilot can safely operate the aircraft. Class 3 certification does not require an exam, but it does require a basic medical evaluation. This includes completing a Medical History Form and submitting recent medical records, such as lab results and a physical exam. You must also pass a Vision and Hearing Test and be able to communicate effectively to be certified. Once you receive your aviation medical certificate, you must renew it every 5 years to maintain certification. If you experience any medical issues that may affect your certification, you must obtain an evaluation and certification from an AME before flying.
