What is the process for obtaining a flight instructor certificate?
In Florida, in order to obtain a flight instructor certificate, an individual must complete a few steps. First, the individual must complete an application to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This application can be found on the FAA website and must include proof of identity, proof of citizenship or permanent residence, a completed medical form, and a processing fee. Second, the individual must pass a written knowledge test. This tests a person’s understanding of aviation principles, safety procedures, navigation methods, and federal aviation regulations. The FAA also requires the individual to possess a valid pilot’s license before attempting this test. Third, the individual must demonstrate the necessary instructional skills in an aircraft. This includes performing ground instruction and flight instruction. The FAA requires the individual to obtain an endorsement from an authorized instructor. The individual must also show proficiency in teaching aeronautical topics. Finally, the individual must pass a checkride. This is an evaluation of both the individual’s instructional and flying abilities. In order to qualify for a flight instructor certificate, the individual must demonstrate excellent instructional and flying abilities during the checkride. Once all these steps are completed, the individual will receive a flight instructor certificate from the FAA. This certificate is valid for two years and must be renewed thereafter.
