What are the requirements for aircraft pilots?
In Utah, aircraft pilots are required to have a valid FAA pilot certificate with the appropriate ratings. The ratings cover areas such as airplane, gyroplane, helicopter, balloon, or airship. The FAA also requires aircraft pilots to pass an aviation medical exam to make sure they have the physical and mental abilities necessary for safe operation of their aircraft. This exam must be done every two years for most pilots. Before earning a pilot certificate, pilots must undergo training with an approved instructor. The amount of instruction varies depending on the type of aircraft. Airplane pilots are required to complete at least 40 hours of flight time and at least 10 hours of solo flying, while helicopter pilots must complete at least 20 hours of flight time and at least 5 hours of solo flying. In addition to the flight training requirement, pilots must also pass a written exam. This exam covers topics such as navigational techniques, aviation regulations, and aircraft maintenance. Pilots must also pass an oral and practical test to show they have a thorough understanding of the aircraft and can safely operate it. To maintain their pilot certificate, pilots must log at least three hours of flight time in the past 90 days, or they must take a flight review with an instructor. This review ensures that a pilot has the necessary skills to remain safe in the air.
