What are the regulations governing aircraft fuel systems?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets the regulations governing aircraft fuel systems for Illinois and all other states. The general requirements include that all fuel systems must be inspected regularly and must meet certain standards for safety. A major regulation is that fuel tanks must be constructed of material strong enough to withstand normal flight conditions and aircraft maneuvers. Aircraft fuel tanks must be designed with the capability to hold their fuel in such a manner as to prevent its spilling, leaking, or mixing with other fluids. The FAA regulates aircraft fuel systems to prevent fire hazards, and to ensure that the fuel system components, such as fuel pumps, lines, and tanks, are safe and in good working order. If the aircraft has pressurized fuel tanks, they must have devices to ensure that fuel is not released into the atmosphere. Every fuel tank must also have a fuel valve or shut-off device that is clearly marked and easily accessible to the flight crew in the event of an emergency. All fuel lines and fittings must be designed, installed and maintained so that no leakage or contamination will occur. Finally, FAA regulations require that all aircraft fuel tanks and fuel lines be inspected at least every 100 flight hours or annually, whichever occurs first. These inspections must be performed in accordance with a detailed and specific maintenance program.
