What is the process for obtaining an aircraft operator’s certificate?

In the state of Florida, obtaining an aircraft operator’s certificate is a process the FAA requires for all operators of civil aircraft. The certificate grants the operator the legal authority to conduct air transportation. First, any applicant must be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen. The application process itself begins with the submission of a written application, called a Form 8260-12, to the local FAA Flight Standards District Office. Along with the application, the operator must submit documents and paperwork that demonstrate they meet certain criteria such as having a valid airworthiness certificate, a valid operating certificate, and proof of insurance. The operator must show that they have sufficient training and knowledge about flying, air navigation, and aviation regulations. They must also pass a written test to show they understand the regulations and are fit to provide safe air transportation. The operator can then go to a designated examiner and demonstrate that they can safely operate an aircraft in accordance with FAA regulations. If the FAA approves the application, the applicant will receive their aircraft operator’s certificate. This certificate must be renewed periodically in order for the operator to continue providing air transportation in Florida.
