What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

In order to obtain an instrument rating in the District of Columbia, a pilot must obtain a certain amount of experience and complete certain training that is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In order to be eligible to take the FAA written exam, a pilot must have logged at least 40 hours of cross-country flight experience, of which fifteen must be in an airplane. A pilot must also have logged at least 50 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, of which at least 10 must be in an airplane. Once a pilot has met the FAA requirements for experience, the next step is to complete the FAA instrument rating practical test. During the practical test, a pilot must demonstrate proficiency in aircraft procedures, navigation, communications, and instrument approaches to the FAA examiner. After the practical test has been completed successfully, the pilot will then be awarded the instrument rating. The instrument rating will allow a pilot to fly in weather conditions that are less than favorable, as long as they have instruments in the cockpit to monitor their performance. In order to maintain a valid instrument rating, a pilot must complete a minimum of six hours of instrument training in an aircraft every six months, three of which must be completed with an instructor. This helps to ensure that the pilot is able to maintain their skills and stay up to date on current FAA regulations.
