What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

To obtain an instrument rating in Missouri, you must be at least 17 years old and possess a valid private or commercial pilot license. Additionally, you must complete a flight training program from an FAA-approved flight school or instructor. As part of the program, you need to complete a minimum of 50 hours of flight time in a plane while also demonstrating competence in various areas of flight, such as takeoff, landing, navigation, and communication. When you are ready to take your FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test, you must make an appointment with a nearby FAA testing center. There, you will be tested on your knowledge of the National Airspace System, aviation weather, instrument navigation, and air traffic control procedures. Once you have passed the FAA exam, you will be given an Instrument Rating Airman Certificate. Before you are allowed to fly alone with an instrument rating, you must complete a “check ride” with an FAA-designated examiner. During the check ride, the examiner will assess your navigation and communication skills with a flight instructor. Once the examiner determines that you have demonstrated your capability and knowledge, you will be issued an Instrument Rating Certificate. Finally, to maintain your instrument rating, you must demonstrate currency by completing at least six instrument approaches, holds, and intercepting and tracking courses within the past six months. You must also complete at least three hours of instrument flight training as well as a biennial flight review with an FAA-approved flight instructor. Following these steps will help keep your rating in good standing and allow you to fly with confidence and safety.
