What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

In Washington, obtaining an instrument rating is an important process for pilots to follow. An instrument rating allows a pilot to be qualified to fly in conditions that are less than ideal, such as darkness and low visibility. To receive an instrument rating, a pilot must pass a written test, complete a physical examination, and take flight lessons. The written test covers topics such aviation theory, aircraft systems, navigation, and air traffic control. After passing the written test, a pilot must pass a physical examination by a certified medical examiner. To complete the flight lessons, the pilot must have a minimum of 40 hours of flight experience and complete a flight test. The flight lessons must include a minimum of 15 hours of instrument time, which consists of at least 10 hours of instruction and 5 hours of solo flying. While flying, the pilot must demonstrate proficiency in areas such as instrument scanning, navigation, and cloud flying. At the end of the flight lessons, the pilot must pass a flight test. During the flight test, the pilot must demonstrate the skills that they have learned in the lessons, such as a navigation and instrument approach. Once the flight test is completed successfully, the pilot can then obtain an instrument rating.
