What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance technician license?

In Washington, for an individual to obtain an aircraft maintenance technician (AMT) license, they must have a combination of education and testing qualifications. This includes completing an FAA-approved AMT course, passing a practical knowledge exam with an FAA designated Mechanic Examiner, and passing an oral and practical exam with an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector. The person must provide the FAA with documentation that shows they satisfactorily completed a course at an FAA-approved school, or they must provide a combination of education and experience. For education, they must have at least 18 months of documented related training that includes a minimum of 30 semester hours of acceptable aviation-related instruction and nine months of working with aircraft systems. For experience, they must have at least 18 months of maintenance experience that consists of 18 months of satisfactory work on aircrafts. Once the person has provided the necessary materials to the FAA, they will be asked to take a written and practical test administered by an FAA Inspector. During the written exam, the person will be tested on their knowledge of aircraft safety regulations and the laws governing aircraft maintenance and inspection. The practical exam will involve the person demonstrating their knowledge and ability to safely work on aircraft. Once the person has satisfactorily passed all the tests and requirements, they will then be issued their AMT license. This license will allow the person to perform aircraft maintenance and inspections. It is important that any individual who holds such license strictly adheres to the requirements set forth by the FAA in order to maintain their license.
