What are the rules and regulations regarding crew rest and duty time?

In Washington state, both federal and state aviation laws outline rules and regulations for crew rest and duty time for pilots and other crew members. Under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee (ARAC), all air carriers are held to the same level of safety standards, which include the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing System (ASIAS) and the Flight Duty and Rest Requirements (FDRR). The ASIAS program focuses on providing more data-driven risk assessments of aviation operations, while the FDRR outlines the required flight rest and duty time for crew members. According to the FAA, a pilot must receive at least eight hours of rest between flight duties and no more than two flights and twelve hours of duty in one day. This rule applies to both commercial and general aviation. In addition to the FAA rules, the Washington state legislature has enacted its own rules for flight crew rest and duty time. For example, pilots are required to have a minimum of twenty-four hours of rest between flight duty cycles and cannot fly more than sixteen hours of flight time within a twenty-four-hour period. Furthermore, pilots cannot be on duty for more than sixteen hours in any thirty-day period. All in all, both federal and state aviation laws are in place to ensure the safety of all passengers, crew, and aircraft. All pilots and other crew members must adhere to the FAA’s FDRR, as well as the Washington state legislature’s regulations for crew rest and duty time. Ultimately, these regulations are put in place to protect the safety and well-being of everyone involved in aviation operations in Washington.
