What is the process for obtaining an endorsement to carry hazardous materials?

In Washington, individuals wishing to obtain an endorsement to carry hazardous materials must first register with the FAA and obtain a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME). The individual must then take and pass the FAA’s Hazardous Materials Knowledge Test. This test is available to be taken at any FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) office, or in some cases, in conjunction with approved Part 142 training centers. After passing the test, the individual must provide documentation to the FAA to prove that they are currently employed by or provide services to an entity that transports hazardous materials and that the individual is capable of performing the duties associated with transporting hazardous materials. The individual must also provide the FAA with documentation to prove that they have received hazardous materials training as required by the hazardous materials regulations of the FAA. After the individual has provided all of the required documentation, they will then be issued a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME) and be authorized to carry hazardous materials.
