What is the process for obtaining a Dispatcher Certificate?

In Colorado, the process for obtaining a Dispatcher Certificate is a two-step process. The first step is to obtain a Flight Dispatcher License (FDL). The FDL is issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It requires applicants to pass a written exam and a practical test to qualify. The second step is to obtain a Dispatcher Certificate, which is issued by the State of Colorado. This certificate requires applicants to have at least 200 hours of experience related to aircraft dispatch or operations and 70 hours of experience related to operations control. A recommendation from a certified dispatcher also must be obtained. Once all of these criteria are met, an applicant may submit an application to the State of Colorado. The application must include proof of experience, exam scores, flight dispatcher license and recommendation, as well as a fee. The application is then reviewed and if all criteria are met, the State of Colorado will issue the Dispatcher Certificate. Applicants should also note that while the State of Colorado will issue the Dispatcher Certificate, they are not responsible for the maintenance or renewal of the certificate. That responsibility lies with the FAA. Before flying, an applicant must be sure their FAA license is up to date and that they are in compliance with any FAA regulations.
