What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to obtain a helicopter rating in Kansas, you must first meet the eligibility requirements. You must be at least 17 years of age and possess a valid US driver’s license. You must also have logged at least 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours in a helicopter. Additionally, you must be able to read, speak, and understand English. Once you meet the eligibility requirements, you must complete a minimum of 10 hours of helicopter flight instruction. This instruction must be in-flight and with an FAA-certified flight instructor. During the training, you should expect to learn about flying in different situations and procedures, such as night flying, maneuvering in the air, and understanding the principles of helicopter flight. After the training is complete, you must take and pass a written knowledge test. This test will cover topics such as airframes, instruments, radio communications, navigation, and weather. The test can be taken at most airports in Kansas. Finally, after passing the written knowledge test, you must successfully pass a practical test with an FAA-certified flight examiner. The examiner will observe your flying skills and ensure that you can safely operate a helicopter in different situations. Once you complete all of the requirements, you will receive a helicopter rating which will be valid for 24 months. After it expires, you will need to retake the written knowledge test in order to maintain the rating.
