What are the regulations regarding aircraft radio communication?
In the state of Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates aircraft radio communication. This includes both visual communication, such as using hand signals, and radio communication. Aircraft operators are required to have a radio on board to communicate with air traffic controllers, airfield personnel, and other aircraft. When using radio communication, aircraft operators must follow the rules described in the FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). This includes using correct language and phonetic alphabet when communicating, as well as providing complete information to air traffic controllers when making a call. Additionally, aircraft operators must properly identify themselves using their registration number or call sign. Aircraft operators must also maintain a listening watch on the proper frequency as designated by the FAA, in order to receive instructions from air traffic controllers. Additionally, aircraft within close proximity of each other must establish communication and provide their position information so that they can communicate their intentions. Finally, only radio-equipped aircraft are allowed to use the radio to communicate. All other aircraft, such as gliders, should use visual communication. All aircraft should be familiar with the rules of radio communication, and ensure that all communications are clear and complete.
