What are the regulations regarding aircraft maintenance training?

In the state of Texas, aircraft maintenance training is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under 14 CFR Part 65, titled “Certification: Airmen Other Than Flight Crewmembers”. This regulation outlines the requirements for an individual to become a certified aircraft mechanic, which includes a combination of practical experience and formal aviation maintenance training. The regulations require potential aircraft mechanics to obtain a minimum of 18 months of practical experience working on aircrafts or a minimum of 30 months experience supervising aircrafts. Additionally, applicants are required to obtain an aviation maintenance technician school certificate from an FAA-approved school. This certificate, or AMTS, must be obtained within 24 months of the date of application for A&P certification. In order to complete the aviation maintenance training required for certification, the FAA requires a minimum of 1,900 hours of course instruction and 1,900 hours of supervised practical training. This training should cover a variety of topics, including airframe systems, aircraft engines, and aircraft repair and maintenance. The regulations require that all individuals seeking certification must pass the FAA written and oral tests. The written test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, while the oral test is a two-hour evaluation with an FAA-appointed examiner. Once all of the requirements are fulfilled, applicants must submit an application to the FAA for certification as a certificated aircraft mechanic, or A&P license. Upon receiving the license, the applicant is authorized to perform aircraft maintenance and repair.
