What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?
In Texas, the process for obtaining an Instrument Rating (IR) is a multi-step process focused on the development of the pilot’s knowledge and skill in flying aircraft by reference to the aircraft instruments. The initial step is to obtain an Instrument Rating written exam from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) office. This computerized exam will test the pilot’s knowledge of the FAA regulations and procedures necessary to obtain an IR. Once the exam is successfully completed, the pilot must receive a minimum of 40 hours of instrument flight training. This flight training must be obtained from an FAA-certified Flight Instructor. The training will include learning how to navigate using the aircraft instruments, as well as emergency procedures and how to safely fly the aircraft in various weather conditions. Additionally, the Flight Instructor must administer a practical test to the pilot to assess their ability to fly the aircraft using the aircraft instruments. The flight instructor will determine if the pilot is safe to operate the aircraft under IFR (instrument flight rules). After successfully passing the practical test, the pilot then must receive an FAA Airman Certificate and a Medical Certificate from an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner. The FAA will then issue the Instrument Rating which can be added to the pilot’s Airman Certificate. Upon completion of these steps, the pilot can then legally fly an aircraft under IFR conditions.
