In Texas, the process for obtaining an Instrument Rating (IR) is a multi-step process focused on the development of the pilot’s knowledge and skill in flying aircraft by reference to the aircraft instruments. The initial step is to obtain an Instrument Rating written exam from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) office. This computerized exam will test the pilot’s knowledge of the FAA regulations and procedures necessary to obtain an IR.
