What are the rules and regulations regarding pilot medical examinations?
In Texas, all pilots must meet certain medical requirements in order to become certified and maintain their certification. All pilots must have a valid form of medical certification that is valid for the functions of their specific aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has different medical requirements for pilots depending on the type of aircraft they wish to fly. Pilots must undergo a medical examination at least every two years in order to maintain their medical certification. This examination must be conducted by an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner. The examiner will ask questions about the applicant’s medical history and perform physical exam, including an ear, nose, and throat exam, vision test, and a urine test. The examiner will also determine if the pilot is healthy enough to operate an aircraft safely. If the pilot has a medical condition or treatment that may affect their ability to safely operate an aircraft, the medical examiner may require additional testing before certifying the pilot. Some medical conditions may require additional testing every 6-12 months, while others may require special issuance authorization from the FAA. In addition to a medical examination, pilots must also possess a valid medical certificate and follow all medical standards listed in the FAA regulations. Pilots must also log their flying hours to keep track of their flying activities and maintain proficiency in order to remain certified.
