What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to obtain a helicopter rating in the state of Texas, you must complete a training program through an approved school or instructor. Typically the program consists of at least 40 hours of flight instruction and 10 hours of classroom instruction. After completion of the program, you must pass a written exam as well as a practical flight exam. The written exam is administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and requires comprehensive knowledge of aeronautical subjects. You must also demonstrate a mastery of the fundamentals of helicopter operations, navigation, meteorology, and radio communication. Additionally, you must have a basic understanding of federal aviation regulations and aeronautical safety rules and regulations. The practical flight exam requires you to demonstrate proficiency in controlling the aircraft in various conditions. During the exam, you will be required to demonstrate take-offs and landings, cruising, and maneuvers. The examiner will also quiz you on regulations, safety, and other topics. Once you have successfully completed the written and practical exams, you will receive an FAA-approved helicopter rating. This rating is valid for the state of Texas and allows you to conduct commercial and private flight operations in a helicopter. It is important that you keep your rating current by periodically taking refresher and safety courses to remain compliant with FAA standards.
