What is the process for obtaining a turbine engine endorsement?
In Indiana, obtaining a turbine engine endorsement requires a pilot to have an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, a valid medical certification, and a current turbine engine endorsement. To acquire the endorsement, the pilot must first pass a written exam focused on turbine engine aircraft and operations. The exam can be taken and a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorized Flight Instructor with a turbine engine endorsement can provide the necessary instruction. Once the written exam is passed, the next step is to complete the endorsement with the FAA. A pilot must make an appointment with a designated FAA examiner and provide documentation of the written exam being passed and the completion of the required training. The examiner will provide an oral exam which will cover the turbine engine aircraft and operations and the pilots must demonstrate their knowledge before being approved for the endorsement. The pilot must also have logged at least 25 hours of turbine engine experience of which at least 10 hours must have been completed in actual or simulated turbine engine aircraft. The experience must also have been logged in the last 12 months, with at least 5 hours as a pilot-in-command. Once all requirements have been met, the pilot must complete a practical exam with the FAA examiner to prove competence in operating a turbine engine aircraft. Upon successfully passing the practical exam, the pilot will be issued the turbine engine endorsement.
