What is the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating?

In Oklahoma, an aircraft type rating is required for an individual to operate certain aircraft. To be eligible to apply for a type rating, an individual must have a current FAA Private or Commercial Pilot’s License and have a minimum of 200 hours of logged flight time. The process for obtaining an aircraft type rating begins by identifying the particular aircraft model for which a rating is desired. An individual must then complete an FAA form 8710-1 Airman Certificate and/or rating application. This form must be endorsed by both an instructor and an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). The next step is to complete an FAA Type Rating Course Syllabus. This syllabus must include the learning objectives and the number of hours of instruction. Once completed, the syllabus must be submitted to the FAA Aircraft Certification Office for approval. Once the syllabus is approved, the applicant must complete the type rating course at an FAA authorized training center. After completing the course, the applicant must pass the FAA Type Rating Practical Test. The applicant must then complete the FAA form 8710-1 and submit it to the DPE for completion. Once all requirements for type rating have been met, the FAA will issue a type rating for the specified aircraft model. This rating will appear on the back of the applicant’s FAA Airman Certificate. Once complete, the individual can legally operate aircraft of the specified type.
