What is the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating?
In Washington, the process for obtaining an aircraft type rating requires the completion of several steps. The first step is to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate and pass a knowledge test. The test consists of questions regarding the aircraft’s systems and navigation. Once the knowledge test is passed, you must then complete a training program, either through a flight school or a simulator program approved by the FAA. After the training is completed, you must pass a practical flight test, known as a check ride. This test is conducted by an FAA-certified examiner and includes a pre-flight inspection, flight maneuvers, and instrument procedures. If the check ride is successfully passed, the FAA-certfied examiner will issue a temporary aircraft type rating and a logbook endorsement. This temporary rating is valid for one year, during which time the applicant must maintain the rating by completing a certain number of flight hours in the aircraft. The final step of the process is to complete a flight proficiency check with an FAA-certified instructor. After the check is completed, the instructor will issue a full aircraft type rating, which is valid for the remainder of the FAA medical certificate. It is important to keep updated on FAA regulations and maintain regular flight hours in order to keep the aircraft type rating valid.
