What are the regulations governing aircraft noise control?
In Utah, the regulation of aircraft noise control is handled by the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ has rules that are designed to limit the amount of noise that can be emitted by aircrafts. These rules apply to both large and small aircrafts operating within the state. The Utah DEQ has set limits to the amount of noise that an aircraft can generate. These limits depend on the type of aircraft as well as how close it is to populated areas. Generally, the DEQ limits aircraft to 65 decibels of aircraft noise at any given time, or 55 decibels at any given time if they are located within two miles of an airport. These limits must be maintained at all times while the aircraft is in operation. The DEQ also has rules that require aircrafts to follow certain noise control procedures. These procedures include maintaining certain altitudes and speeds when coming in for a landing, as well as reducing the noise from engines when idling. Additionally, the DEQ has regulations that designate certain airspace areas as noise sensitive, meaning that aircrafts must reduce their noise levels when flying over these areas. Finally, the DEQ maintains a complaint system for aircraft noise control. Citizens who wish to file a complaint about an aircraft’s noise level can do so by contacting the DEQ directly. The DEQ will then investigate the complaint, and if necessary take action to ensure that the aircraft is abiding by the rules governing aircraft noise control.
