What is the process for obtaining an aircraft maintenance engineer certificate?

In Oklahoma, anyone wanting to become an aircraft maintenance engineer must complete a certain process. This process includes several steps. First, applicants must be at least 18 years of age. They must then complete an FAA-approved aircraft maintenance engineering program, which is typically offered at a college or technical school. This program typically lasts 18 to 24 months, and it consists of both classroom and practical training. Upon successful completion of the program, students can apply for the FAA-administered Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) certificate. When applying, applicants must submit the required paperwork to the FAA such as the application form, a passport-style photograph, a copy of their birth certificate along with associated fees. They must also pass an FAA-administered knowledge test, as well as an FAA-approved oral and practical exam. Applicants that pass both exams will receive a recommended endorsement from their testing center. Lastly, applicants must have at least 18 months of experience in aircraft maintenance before they can receive their AME certificate. Once the applicant is approved, they will be issued an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate. After obtaining the AME certificate, it must be renewed every two years. To maintain a valid certificate, applicants must complete 14 hours of continuing education courses that are approved by the FAA. As long as the applicant completes the required steps, they will be able to obtain the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate in Oklahoma.
