What are the requirements for aircraft fuel systems?
In Oklahoma, aircraft fuel systems are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aircraft fuel systems must meet the requirements set forth in Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 23. The fuel system must be designed and constructed to provide adequate capacity for engine operation over all periods of anticipated use and must remain free from hazardous conditions. Specifically, aircraft fuel systems must contain fuel quantity indication, fuel shutoff, and fuel tank venting systems. The fuel quantity indication system must be able to accurately indicate the amount of fuel remaining in the tank and must be easily visible or audible to the pilot. The fuel shutoff system must be designed in such a way that the pilot can easily turn off the fuel flow from the tank. Finally, the fuel tank venting system must be designed to prevent fuel from spilling and must be able to adequately vent fuel vapor. The fuel system must also be constructed so that it does not contain any sharp edges that could cause injury to the pilot or passengers or damage to the aircraft. The fuel system is also required to contain appropriate seals, clamps, and fittings to prevent leakage and/or contamination. Aircraft engines must also be equipped with spark arrestors and flame dampeners to prevent fires. Finally, fuel tanks must be inspected at least every 12 calendar months and must be serviced according to the aircraft manufacturer’s maintenance and inspection schedule. If the aircraft is registered in Oklahoma, the aircraft must be inspected every two years by the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission.
