What are the rules and regulations regarding crew rest and duty time?
Crew rest and duty time rules and regulations in California are subject to federal regulations issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). For most operations, the FAA requires that crew members take a rest period of at least 10 consecutive hours while they are on duty. During this period, they may not be asked to perform any job-related tasks, and they must be given time to nap or sleep. Crew members are also required to have a minimum of 8 continuous hours of rest between duty periods. Additionally, the FAA has set limits on the number of hours a crew member can work during a duty week. Generally, a pilot may not be assigned more than 100 hours of flight duty time per 7 consecutive days. Flight Attendants may be assigned no more than 85 hours of flight duty time during a 7 consecutive day period. Pilots must also be given 30 hours of rest between any 7 day period and Flight Attendants must be given 34 hours of rest in the same time period. These regulations are in place to keep crew members safe and ensure the safety of passengers, as fatigue can be a major factor in aviation safety. Any crew member who feels that their rest/duty time requirements are not being met may contact the FAA for further information and assistance.
