What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?

In order to obtain a helicopter rating in California, you must first obtain a private pilot certificate. To obtain a private pilot certificate, you must be at least 16 years old, pass an FAA written exam, complete at least 40 hours of flight instruction, and have a valid U.S. driver’s license. After you complete the private pilot certificate process, you can begin the process of obtaining a helicopter rating. To get a helicopter rating, you must first complete a minimum of 4 hours of dual instruction with an instructor, a maximum of 6 hours of solo flight training, 5 hours of dual instruction with an instructor to learn cross-country navigation skills, and a minimum of 2 hours of night dual instruction and three takeoffs and landings to a full stop at night. You will then need to take a checkride with an FAA Examiner. This checkride will assess your ability to fly a helicopter, such as takeoffs, landings, navigation, radio communications, and emergency operations. To prepare for this checkride, you will fly with an instructor and receive instruction in all the above areas. Once you pass the checkride, you will be issued a helicopter rating, and you can fly helicopters legally in the United States. It is essential that you keep up with your training and practice your skills regularly in order to maintain your rating.
